I-Corps Program Director, NSF
Andre Marshall joined NSF in 2017 as Program Director for the Industry-University Cooperative Research Centers Program (IUCRC) on assignment from the University of Maryland, College Park. He currently serves as Innovation Corps (I-Corps) Program Director in the Division of Industrial Innovation and Partnerships (IIP). At UMD, Andre is an associate professor in Fire Protection Engineering and the director of the Fire Testing and Evaluation Center. Andre began his professional career as a senior project engineer developing patented award-winning technology as part of NASA’s Advanced Subsonic Transport (AST) program. He returned to the academy with a focus on discovery and received the prestigious NSF Presidential Early Career Award in Science and Engineering (PECASE) in 2008 for his research in atomization and sprays. This basic research yielded IP and in 2012 Andre participated in the I-Corps Program as Technical Lead and shortly thereafter founded Custom Spray Solutions, Inc., a startup focused on game-changing innovations in fire sprinkler system design and analysis.
Since his 2012 I-Corps experience, Andre has shifted his attention toward use-inspired research and university-based lab to market activities. Andre holds a Ph.D. from the University of Maryland, College Park in the area of thermofluids.
