Vice President of Research, Rowan University
Beena Sukumaran is currently Vice President of Research at Rowan University. During her first year in this role, she has grown the research output of Rowan University by approximately 50 percent. Her previous leadership positions at Rowan University include the President’s Fellow for Diversity and Inclusion from 2017 to 2018. She served as Department Head of CEE (Civil and Environmental Engineering) for seven years from 2010 to 2017 and during this period, the department doubled the undergraduate student enrollment and grew it to a highly competitive and sought after program. She is a firm believer in service and experiential learning. She has also worked tirelessly through research and education to identify strategies to recruit and retain a diverse engineering student body while creating an inclusive engineering curriculum.
She has been on the faculty in the Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) Department at Rowan University since 1998. She worked at Amoco and the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute before joining Rowan. She obtained her Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering from Purdue University in 1996.
